VMware-to-Proxmox migration

Migration is where most of the risk lives, so it's where we do the most planning. Our process:

  1. Assess — we inventory every VM, its resources, dependencies, and backup state, and map out networking and storage.
  2. Design — we spec the target Proxmox cluster (nodes, storage, network) sized to your real workload and growth.
  3. Migrate — we convert and move virtual disks, adjust drivers where needed, and validate each guest boots, networks, and performs correctly.
  4. Cut over — we schedule the switch to minimize downtime, keeping the VMware environment intact and reversible until the new platform is proven.
  5. Verify — backups, monitoring, and high availability are tested before we call it done.

For a two-plus node cluster we use hyperconverged, software-defined storage — Ceph or LINSTOR (DRBD replication) — or ZFS with replication for smaller setups, so a VM can restart automatically on another node if hardware fails. We size the storage and network (including 10GbE where warranted) to your workload rather than a one-size template.
How are Proxmox backups protected against ransomware?
We pair Proxmox with Proxmox Backup Server for deduplicated, incremental backups and keep immutable or offsite copies so a compromise of the live environment can't destroy your recovery points. This ties into our broader backup and disaster recovery practice.
